CAIRO (Reuters) - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will visit Egypt's border with Gaza on Saturday to renew pleas for a ceasefire that could bring relief to a territory devastated by more than five months of war between Israel and Hamas. His trip comes as Israel threatens to launch a major military operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, just over the border from Egypt, despite international appeals against such an attack. He is expected to visit a hospital in Al Arish and meet U.N. humanitarian workers in Rafah. More than 32,000 people have been killed by Israel's military campaign in Gaza, many of them women and children, according to local health authorities. Guterres, who made one previous trip to Egypt's border with Gaza shortly after the war broke out, is visiting Egypt and Jordan as part of an annual "solidarity trip" to Muslim countries during Ramadan.

The Israeli leader’s claim contradicts statements he made previously, in which he boasted about permitting “minimal humanitarian aid” to enter Gaza. “We provide minimal humanitarian aid,” Netanyahu said at a press conference in January. The first 15 days of March saw an average of 165 aid trucks per day cross into Gaza, UNRWA reported Sunday. The UN and other aid groups have reported some of their aid trucks had been looted, but haven’t ascribed any blame for it.

Israel and Hamas have reached a deal that would allow medications to be delivered to Israeli hostages in return for additional medicine and aid for Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, officials said, marking a significant breakthrough in the indirect talks between the warring sides. The agreement was announced on Tuesday by Qatar, who have served as a mediator. Health officials have said separately that the hostages would receive psychological attention and specialised care for any who may have suffered sexual assault. ANKARA (Reuters) - More than 100 evacuees from Gaza are set to arrive in Turkey on Monday, including dozens of people who will receive medical treatment there, Turkey's health minister and a foreign ministry source said. He said last week that Ankara wanted to bring as many of the nearly 1,000 cancer patients from Gaza to Turkey as possible. The first 27 patients arrived in Ankara last Thursday. The foreign ministry source also said that if conditions on the ground permit, Turkey aimed to get around 100 more people out of Gaza on Monday. A month ago, Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmet Yildiz said some 700 people, including Turkish, Palestinian, and northern Cypriot citizens, had applied to Turkey to be evacuated from Gaza.

"We are looking at the case for full medical evacuation but there are a lot of security concerns, there are a lot of logistics constraints. "Field hospitals can, potentially, be equipped to provide specialised medical care, given their modular structure, but this would be further down the line. The charity Medical Aid for Palestinians on Thursday described the situation in hospitals as "beyond catastrophic" with dwindling fuel, packed corridors and many medics themselves bereaved and homeless. We are doing everything possible to get more humanitarian aid in," he said, adding that the limitations on aid trucks entering Gaza were down to logistical challenges, not Israeli restrictions.

Yet over the last three weeks of Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza, Rafah has become the focus of heated negotiations, a place where many people, both powerful and powerless, have pinned their waning hopes. Tunneling became easier in 2005 when Israel pulled its soldiers and settlers out of Gaza, and when Hamas won power in a 2006 election. Although the military tunnels remained off-limits to outside eyes, during that era Gaza smugglers would show off their scarcely concealed commercial tunnels under the Rafah border. ISTANBUL, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Turkey sent a plane with a medical team and supplies to Egypt on Sunday carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said. "Our plane took off to help Gaza. The presidential plane filled with medicine and medical supplies, carrying 20 specialist doctors, departed from Ankara to Egypt," Koca said in a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The footage shared by the minister showed boxes marked with their contents being loaded onto a Turkish presidency plane. It says aid can enter through Egypt provided supplies do not end up in the hands of Hamas.

Earlier, the United States had said details of a deal to send aid through the Rafah crossing were still being hammered out. Before the outbreak of conflict, about 450 aid trucks were arriving there daily. Most of Gaza’s 2.3 million people depend on humanitarian aid. A U.N. official said more than 200 trucks of aid were ready to move from Sinai to Gaza. During previous conflicts, aid had been delivered to Gaza during humanitarian pauses through the Kerem Shalom crossing, which is controlled by Israel.

More aid is being held in the Egyptian city of Al Arish, about 45 km (28 miles) from Rafah. Western governments have been negotiating for the evacuation of foreign passport holders from Gaza, something Egyptian officials have conditioned on aid getting in. It said it would continue a blockade of humanitarian aid from Israel into Gaza until hostages held by Hamas were returned. Israel and Egypt have upheld a blockade of Gaza since Hamas took control of the territory in 2007, tightly controlling the movement goods and people.
